Hi all! Here's the swatches and review on the last two remaining products I purchased from the Nars Summer Collection for 2012...

Swatch is done against olive medium to light tan skin tone (~NC30). (Photographed indoors using a strobe). You can see that 'Moscow' is a fairly deep, orange red. Hopefully, you can also see the slightly creamy texture of it and a bit of a sheen. The shade has excellent colour pay-off, so much so that you don't need to use much of it to get full coverage! 'Moscow' pairs well with the Nars 'Ramatuelle' eye shadow trio.
Texture and Longevity
Despite what the name and product description claims, I found that the Pure Matte Lipstick is not completely matte in finish. It has a slightly creamy texture, which makes it feel moisturising on the lips. However, it does mean it leaves the slightest moisture and sheen on the lips so it's not completely matte. Personally, I don't find this a problem as I think it's a good balance of comfort and achieving a close-to-matte-like finish. To me, it's matte enough! :-) The lipstick is indeed long lasting as it pretty much lasts the entire day for me.

AU$40 / US$25 for 2 g / 0.07 oz of product.
My Thoughts
It is true, 'Moscow' is not that unique in colour, but it's one of those bold shades that can definitely be made more wearable by having a more matte finish. It's still one of those classic reds that all women should have - particularly if you have a warm skin tone. It's a nice way to easily add a pop of colour to your look and looks very modern, clean and fresh when paired with minimal make up to the rest of the face.
Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in 'Never Say Never'
Nars' product description:
"The application of a lipstick combined with the convenience of a pencil in a jumbo crayon design. Lips are instantly saturated with rich pigments and a velvety matte finish. The long lasting, non-drying formula is enriched with emollients for a creamy texture, while a combination of unique silicones ensures long-lasting, seamless color for hours. Use for lining, all-over lip color, or pairing with another lip product.
- Rich, vivid shades
- Enriched with Vitamin E
- Convenient, easy application"
"Line, fill, then top with gloss — or don’t. This lilac rose Velvet Matte Lip Pencil delivers a look you’ll never say no to, however you choose to wear it."

Again, swatch is done against olive medium to light tan skin tone (~NC30). (Photographed indoors using a strobe). Hopefully, you can see that compared with the Nars Pure Matte Lipstick, the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil does not have the same creaminess in texture and does not have the sheen in finish. 'Never Say Never' pairs well with the Nars 'Marie-Galante' Eye Shadow Duo.
Texture and Longevity
The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is definitely completely matte in finish, but it's unlike many matte lipsticks in that it feels non-drying on the lips (i.e., it doesn't dry it out). However, it is does not feel moisturising like the Nars Pure Matte Lipstick does. Hope that makes sense! /:-\ True to its name, it feels comfortably lightweight and velvety. It feels soft and indeed, glides on effortlessly. It's lasts on my lips for most of the day through sips of drinks and a light meal or two. This lip product is probably one of my most favoured matte lipsticks I have come across.

My Thoughts
I love Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencils because they are true to their name in terms of texture and finish. They are also one of the easiest lip products to use and carry as it's just like a crayon pencil! My only two, tiny complaints are that you have to manually sharpen it to get more product - a slight inconvenience if you're on the go or in a rush and also, there is some product wastage as you sharpen it. /:-\ Otherwise, definitely a great product. ;-) Last but not least, the shade 'Never Say Never' is definitely a winner for me. I'm a sucker for pinks and lilacs/purple-toned pinks. I think this one is particularly brightening and flattering especially on those with cool skin tones.
Both the 'Moscow' Pure Matte Lipstick and 'Never Say Never' Velvet Matte Lip Pencil have been added to the permanent line. Do I hear a sigh of relief? ;-) I purchased mine from Kiss and Makeup NY, but you can also find these online direct from Nars and at Mecca Cosmetica.
Overall Recommendation
If I had to pick just one of the two, I would choose the 'Never Say Never' Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, purely because it's a gorgeous, bright shade and one I don't have an exact or too close a match for in my existing lipstick collection. (I still love an orange-red though - can't seem to get enough of them! LOL).
Hope this was helpful.
Thanks for stopping by! xo ^_^
